Mike Conway takes the Silverware
Donington Park
21 May 2006
Mike Conway took the Donington Park Racing Association Clubs Raymond Mays Salver at a wet Donington Park, to become the first driver to retain the silverware for a second year.
As the drivers struggled with difficult track conditions the advantage changed by the lap, but Conway the pre-race favourite did enough over the two races to retain the Salver.
Starting from pole in race one the Kent driver looked set to bag 15 points to take into race two until debris from a back-marker tussle caught under his car and forced him to visit the gravel at Redgate.
This left James Walker as top British finisher taking 12 points and with second place on the grid for race two he was now the new favourite to take the silverware. Also in with a good chance were local driver Stephen Jelly and Oliver Jarvis with 10 and eight points respectively.
Race two started badly for Jelly who was out on lap one. Conway however made a fast start and was well in the lead. Next to drop out of contention was Hall followed by Jarvis on lap eight and Walker on lap 14, meaning that a top three finish for Conway would give the Double R Racing driver the Salver for the second year running. Conway made no mistake taking a lights-to-flag victory and a well deserved second year with the Raymond Mays Salver in his trophy cabinet.
The trophy was presented to Conway by Raikkonen Robertson Racing co-owner Steve Robertson who was himself a winner of the Raymond Mays Salver in 1989.
